Effect of algal inoculation on the yield and vitamin C content of two varieties of tomato

Summary Two varieties of tomato (Pusa Rubi and Selection 120) positively responded to algal inoculation in terms of the yield of fruits and shoots, but there was no significant effect on the vitamin C content of the fruits. A combined application of urea and algae was more effective than the application of urea alone.     

Activation of delta5-3-ketosteroid isomerase of bovine adrenal microsomes by serum albumins.

The Δ⁵-3-ketosteroid isomerase (EC 5.3.3.1) of bovine adrenal microsomes is activated as much as 10- to 20-fold by micromolar concentrations of bovine serum albumin. Comparable activations are observed with the serum albumins of 10 other mammalian species, but are not seen with ovalbumin or conalbumin. Evidence that the activation is attributable to the serum albumins, rather than to a small, firmly-bound ligand, is based on: (1) Failure to remove the stimulatory activity from the albumin by chloroform extraction, dialysis, or gel filtration; (2) Destruction of the activity by heating or by trypsin digestion; (3) Precipitation of the stimulatory activity of bovine serum albumin by specific antibody. Bovine serum albumin induces small decreases in the Michaelis constant for Δ⁵-androstene-3,17-dione, but most of the activational effect reflects an increase in the maximum velocity. Low concentrations of Triton X-100, which are without effect on the isomerase activity, prevent the activation by bovine serum albumin.     

GPR35 is a novel lysophosphatidic acid receptor

GPR35 is a rhodopsin-like G protein-coupled receptor identified in 1998. It has been reported that kynurenic acid, a tryptophan metabolite, may act as an endogenous ligand for GPR35. However, the concentrations of kynurenic acid required to elicit the cellular responses are usually high, raising the possibility that another endogenous ligand may exist. In this study, we searched for another endogenous ligand for GPR35. Finally, we found that the magnitude of the Ca²⁺ response induced by 2-acyl lysophosphatidic acid in the GPR35-expressing HEK293 cells was markedly greater than that in the vector-transfected control cells. Such a difference was not apparent in the case of 1-acyl lysophosphatidic acid. 2-Acyl lysophosphatidic acid also caused the sustained activation of RhoA and the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and triggered the internalization of the GPR35 molecule. These results strongly suggest that 2-acyl lysophosphatidic acid is an endogenous ligand for GPR35.     

Towards a matrix mechanics framework for dynamic protein network

Protein–protein interaction networks are currently visualized by software generated interaction webs based upon static experimental data. Current state is limited to static, mostly non-compartmental network and non time resolved protein interactions. A satisfactory mathematical foundation for particle interactions within a viscous liquid state (situation within the cytoplasm) does not exist nor do current computer programs enable building dynamic interaction networks for time resolved interactions. Building mathematical foundation for intracellular protein interactions can be achieved in two increments (a) trigger and capture the dynamic molecular changes for a select subset of proteins using several model systems and high throughput time resolved proteomics and, (b) use this information to build the mathematical foundation and computational algorithm for a compartmentalized and dynamic protein interaction network. Such a foundation is expected to provide benefit in at least two spheres: (a) understanding physiology enabling explanation of phenomenon such as incomplete penetrance in genetic disorders and (b) enabling several fold increase in biopharmaceutical production using impure starting materials.     

Identification of Tumor Antigens in the HLA Peptidome of Patient-derived Xenograft Tumors in Mouse

An Analysis of Variance of Nominal Data

This paper considers a common problem in analysis of variance where the responses to a set of treatments are nominal (i.e. are recorded in frequencies) with no underlying metric. Reasoning by analogy from standard analysis of variance of a two-way classification we develop chi-square tests for significance of treatments and interactions. Two tests are proposed for interaction and their asymptotic properties are studied.     

依赖于微环境的TGFβ信号

转化生长因子β（transforming growth factor β，TGFβ）家族成员是一类分泌的细胞因子，在胚胎发育、免疫调节、伤口修复、细胞增殖和抑制等过程中发挥重要作用。其中,TGFβ1、TGFβ2和TGFβ3在进化上最晚出现，并以潜伏态分泌。有别于家族中的大多数成员，TGFβ1-3的信号具有时空区域性，并依赖于其所处的微环境。阐明依赖于微环境的TGFβ信号的多层次调控机制对于理解TGFβ信号在免疫、癌症等生理、病理条件下的功能，以及开发临床治疗策略具有重要意义。本文从TGFβ前体复合物的结构入手，并从TGFβ的激活，配体-受体识别，跨膜信号传导及转录调控等方面，论述依赖于微环境的TGFβ信号的调控机制，同时讨论肿瘤微环境中多效的TGFβ信号，进而对今后的研究方向进行展望。     

Simple method for separating the chlamydoconidia of Candida albicans from its mycelium

Different physical and chemical methods were used to detach the chlamydoconidia of Candida albicans from its mycelium. The action of concentrated H₂SO₄ acid for a 4-min period on cultures lysed both the mycelium and the outer but not the inner wall layer of the chlamydoconidia.The sulfuric acid procedure is recommended as the best method to obtain mycelium free chlamydoconidia because of its simplicity, rapidity and low cost.     

The acquisition of resistance to ecdysteroids in cultured Drosophila cells

Drosophila melanogaster K_c cells become refractory toward ecdysteroids after 4 days of exposure to the molting hormone, 20-OH-ecdysone. Associated with the appearance of hormonal insensitivity is a loss of ecdysteroid receptors. Hormone-resistant cells maintain a low level of receptor that is indistinguishable from that of responsive, hormonally naive cells. After extended periods in culture, ecdysteroid receptor content in previously exposed cells returns to that of naive control cells. The reappearance of receptor is coincident with the resumption of hormonally induced growth inhibition.
